▶ The United States announced that, following Canada’s agreement with China to significantly reduce tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles,
it will strictly block the entry of such vehicles into the U.S. market at the border if routed via Canada, citing concerns over data security risks.
▶ U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra characterized the data-collection capabilities of modern vehicles as a serious security vulnerability,
expressing a firm stance that the United States will not allow any pathway for a large-scale influx of Chinese-made vehicles via Canada.
▶ Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed to introduce an annual quota of 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for expanded access for Canadian agricultural exports;
however, the United States warned that this shift in Canada’s policy could undermine the stability of North American supply chains.
▶ In particular, Ambassador Hoekstra directly identified South Korea, Japan, and Mexico as key countries posing a threat to the U.S. automotive industry,
making it clear that bringing production facilities from these countries back to the U.S. mainland is a top priority for the Trump administration.
